“‘The Heffernan Project’ is a mesmerising collaboration between Aurora Lumina and real time video artist Jutta Pryor, a reflection on the artwork and life of Melbourne artist Edward Bonaventure Heffernan OAM (1912-1992). Dreamlike projections of EB Heffernan artworks translate the musicians’ personal responses and reflections into individual and collaborative compositions and improvisations. ”
The Heffernan project
Michael Currie - Artistic Director
Windows of Longing was born from my encounter with the visual art of my Uncle, Edward Heffernan OAM (1912-1992), who lived and worked for many years in and around Castlemaine, Daylesford, Ballarat and Gordon in central Victoria.
Windows of Longing is a homage to Heffernan’s art which adorned the walls of my childhood home. The images of women and landscapes that Edward created came to have a force, as I grew through adolescence and saw them day after day. This force is difficult in put into words. In our homage music is the medium that carries this force.
My talented and visionary colleagues have made this project more than I could have imagined. Jutta Pryor has captured and enhanced Heffernan’s work digitally. Jenny Game has composed music to augment the themes of eros and place that Heffernan returned to again and again. Steve Falk (on marimba and vibes), Poul Grage (percussion) and Peter Neville (vibes and Steel drums) - master musicians and improvisers – bring a freshness to the moment to remake the project anew with each performance.
This is our Windows of Longing project: an invitation to each of you as the audience to reach inside yourselves and find your own response to each of Heffernan’s works of art. We invite you to find your own Window of Longing.
